Graduate Intern Services

As a Registered Clinical Supervisor, our founder Johanna Wickie is in the unique position of being able to support developing Graduate Intern Therapists as they complete their degree and professional requirements within the Arbutus Counselling practice. In doing this, she will be working with emerging professionals who are utilizing their life experiences, educational background and developing skills with youth, adults and in relationship based work.

All Graduate Intern Therapists that work at Arbutus Counselling will practice with client wellbeing as centre to their practice and will receive ongoing supervision and support from Johanna in their work.

AFFORDABLE, PROFESSIONAL COUNSELLING SERVICES

These services are highly strategic as Graduate Intern Therapists will practice at Arbutus Counselling for approximately one year in duration. We are excited to offer this service here in our community and would be happy to respond to any questions about it that you may have.

FAQ

What does ‘receiving ongoing supervision’ mean for a Graduate Intern Therapist?

As Graduate Intern Therapists offer counselling services to clients during their process of learning and training, they are required to meet with their Clinical Supervisor regularly in order to make sure they are receiving the necessary support to provide the best services to the clients. The Graduate Intern Therapist may share some information from a session to their clinical supervisor to discuss it, but any client identifying information is kept confidential unless necessary, and the supervisor is bound to the same confidentiality agreement as well. Clinical supervision is an integral part of a therapist’s profession, and in fact all registered therapists have one too!

Can my extended benefits cover sessions with a Graduate Intern Therapist?

As any other service, it would be best to contact your provider directly as they are the ones who decide what is covered by your plan or not. Our current rates for working with a Graduate Intern Therapist are $80 for individual sessions and $90 for relationship or family sessions, making this a significantly more accessible and affordable option.

A few things about…

Applying for a Graduate Internship Position

We are so pleased to be supporting the continued growth and professionalization of the counselling and psychotherapy community through our Graduate Internship roles. Our internships are community based, integrated positions that work closely with our existing Arbutus team. All of our internships are 12 months in length, and require two days of clinical contact plus individual or group supervision, often on a separate day. It is reasonable to expect that you would require a minimum of 20 hours of available time to allocate to your internship on a weekly basis.

We would ask that interested candidates contact us at least six months in advance of their proposed commencement of their internship as we require this time to forecast resources for these important roles.

Should you be interested in applying for an internship, we would ask that you provide us with a cover letter and up to date resume that also contains your reference information. In addition, we would ask that you consider, reflect and respond to the following questions prior to submitting your application to us:

  • What is your initial motivation to train as and become a counsellor and psycho-therapist?

  • How do you imagine yourself to work in an ethically guided and responsible way while working in a graduate internship role?

  • What are the key values you hold that you anticipate incorporating into your internship? Why?

  • What draws you to applying for an internship with Arbutus Counselling? How does our practice distinguish itself from others you might be applying to?

  • What do you anticipate to be the more strenuous challenges of working in a community based, private practice? How would you manage those challenges?

  • What sort of supervision experience are you hoping to obtain in your Graduate Internship? Why?

When you’re ready to submit an application, please email the requested information to apply@arbutuscounselling.com.
