Graduate Intern Therapist
Risa Yokoi
Counselling is about creating a brave space where meaningful change unfolds—where you explore your experiences, determine your identity and discover a deeper sense of connection to yourself. You may be feeling overwhelmed and challenged by life transitions or relationship difficulties. There are so many valid reasons to start or re-start therapy.
In therapy sessions with me, you can expect authenticity, curiosity and humour. My work is grounded in respectful collaboration and genuine connection.
While I integrate a range of therapeutic modalities, including Humanistic, Mindfulness, Person-Centered, Cognitive Behavioural, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, my priority is discovering the therapeutic path that feels right for you.
As a Graduate Intern Counsellor, I am committed to tailoring each session to your needs in the present moment. To me, there is no “one size fits all.”
I value supporting individuals in exploring cultural identity through an intersectional lens within our dynamic, often complex world. As someone who grew up moving around across the world until finding home in Canada, I bring the lived experience of navigating change and belonging.
I also bring a decade of experience providing administrative support to counsellors in private practice, including these special five years at Arbutus Counselling. This experience has brought me deep appreciation for the time, energy and courage in seeking counselling, and I am passionate about making the engagement meaningful and ensuring it brings a positive impact to your life.
As a counsellor, my hope is to collaboratively identify inner strength and move toward meaningful and hopeful change through genuine trust and connection.
A few things about RISA…
Outside the therapy room, I enjoy long walks with family and friends, meaningful conversations, and cooking. I value sharing warmth, connection, and care through gathering around food with loved ones.
